This was the last band I played in. All great musicians in their own right. Certain events occurred, and the band lost it’s mojo. I don’t think we knew how good we could’ve been. I played bass and did a lions share of vocals, Bill Leach played guitar and sang when we let him (wink, wink), Woody Estrella played drums, one of the best drummers I’ve played with. The guy was a machine when he was on. Tanya Parker shared the vocal spotlight and was great at playing an audience. We lasted about three years total.
This song was written by myself, Joyce Downs and Randy McQuilkin in Randy’s living room around 1983. At the time, we had just started recording on a Tascam 234, and were writing on the fly. We wanted to do a song about being a night person, and out came Night Animal. I wrote most of the lyrics, despite not being a lyricist. They almost wrote themselves. And I’m a morning person besides.
I gave it the Alice Cooper treatment vocally, and the song evolved further.
My favorite line in the song is in the third verse: “ You can find me walking in your sleep, you never know just where I’ll creep”
This was recorded in Bill’s basement sometime around 2005.
Enjoy.
